Kate Orff, New York landscape architect and founder of SCAPE, is finding new ways to prepare New York’s shores for the next Hurricane Sandy-like superstorm. Her solution? Oyster-tecture.

Her proposal is to embed oyster reefs along Staten Island’s southern end to minimize waves and prevent coastal flooding while cleaning polluted waters (a single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day). These oyster reefs would also restore a diversity of marine and birdlife to the area.
